DICTATE - talk instead of type, in any app (Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 14+)

Everything runs on your Mac. No account, no cloud, nothing leaves the computer.

INSTALL
Option A (easiest): open Terminal in this folder and run: ./install.sh
It copies Dictate.app to ~/Applications, clears the download quarantine, makes it
start at login, and opens it.
Option B (by hand): drag Dictate.app into Applications, then RIGHT-CLICK it > Open > Open.
(A plain double-click is blocked the first time because the app isn't notarized by Apple.
If macOS still refuses: System Settings > Privacy & Security > scroll down > "Open Anyway".
Or in Terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine ~/Applications/Dictate.app )

FIRST RUN
  1. A mic icon appears in the menu bar (top right). It downloads the speech model once
(about 575 MB; the menu shows the % progress). Dictation works when the download finishes.
  2. Allow the Microphone prompt.
  3. Allow keyboard control: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility AND
Input Monitoring (on newer macOS: "Device Control and Data Access") > turn on Dictate.
  4. Quit Dictate from its menu and open it again so the shortcuts take effect.
  5. Optional, to use the fn/Globe key: System Settings > Keyboard > "Press 🌐 key to" > Do Nothing.

USE
Hold Control+Option (or fn) and talk. Let go and the text is typed where your cursor is.
Control+Option+Space hands-free (press again to stop)
  Esc cancel
Control+Command+V paste the last thing you dictated again
The text also stays on the clipboard, so Command+V pastes it again.
Menu bar icon > Microphone choose which mic to use.

SETTINGS
  ~/Library/Application Support/Dictate/config.json (menu > Open config.json)
Add words it gets wrong to "vocabulary" (names, games, slang).

UNINSTALL
  launchctl bootout gui/$(id -u)/com.mjones.dictate; rm ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.mjones.dictate.plist
  rm -rf ~/Applications/Dictate.app ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dictate
